Thanks to you, children were fed during COVID
As the school year has come to a close, we wanted to update you on how Backpack Buddies responded during COVID and continues to operate during the summer months.
A QUICK LOOK AT WHERE WE HELPED DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR:
- 3,520 Food Packs Delivered to Students
- 3,864 Fresh Produce Bags Delivered to NOC Students
- 843 Grocery Store Gift Cards Distributed
Enrollment in the program was at about 60% of a typical year, but food bags were packed and delivered each month to all the public schools on Hilton Head Island. A smaller number of volunteers were used for packing and school deliveries. We appreciate the use of Hilton Head Community Church’s Community Center as a main packing site, with ample room for social distancing. We were able to distribute grocery store gift cards to the families in the elementary school programs.
The snack closets at Hilton Head Middle School and Hilton Head High School were replenished with healthy snack bags each month. By request of the students, Ramen noodles were added. We were happy to add the noodles because that let us know the older kids were eating at home.
We continued to support the after-school programs of Neighborhood Outreach Connection and The Boys and Girls Club of Hilton Head. We were able to give fresh produce twice a week to 97 children in the NOC program along with a monthly grocery store gift card for their families. After school snacks were provided to The Boys and Girls Club for 100 children along with monthly grocery gift cards to families in need.
The summer is the hungriest time for kids and Backpack Buddies will continue to support NOC and The Boys and Girls Club through the summer months. NOC children will still receive fresh produce weekly and monthly grocery gift cards. We will supply The Boys and Girls Club with healthy snacks and grocery store gift cards also.
The financial support of many generous individuals and organizations have allowed us to help the hunger insecure in our community! Thank you so much for acknowledging that these families need help and partnering with us. It is because of you we have been able to creatively pursue getting food to the children in ways different from previous years.
